Planning Center can’t show you who’s serving without a check
Every screening view starts from a check record. A volunteer who never had one isn’t late or missing on any list: they simply aren’t there. Shield starts from who is actually serving instead.

Checks run through Checkr's Planning Center integration are recorded in People, and Shield reads them the same way.
Only through Planning Center
Shield connects to Planning Center's API and nothing else. It never logs in to your screening provider and never orders a check.

Questions about Shield
Does Shield run or order background checks?
No. Shield never orders a check, sends an invitation, emails a volunteer or changes anything in Planning Center. Every background check and every training invitation is still ordered in Planning Center, exactly as before, and your church's screening provider runs the checks.
Which screening providers does it work with?
Protect My Ministry (Planning Center 2.0 integration) and Checkr. Checks from both are recorded in Planning Center People, and Shield reads them there. For safety training, an admin can import Protect My Ministry's training export. Shield isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Protect My Ministry or Checkr, and it doesn't run background checks.
How current are the figures?
Shield reads Planning Center every night, and managers and admins can refresh whenever they need to. The age of the figures is at the top of every page, and a banner appears if the nightly read has not finished for 36 hours or reading Planning Center has started failing.
Why might a number differ from Planning Center?
Only people on counted Services teams are counted as serving, and which teams count is chosen team by team. People marked inactive in Planning Center, or whose membership says they have left, are left out. Every screen has a “Where these numbers come from” panel that spells out exactly what it counted.
Who can see names and check details?
Names, and anything opened from a list, are read live with your own Planning Center account. If you can't see a person or their background check in Planning Center, you won't see them in Shield either.
What does Shield store?
Statuses, dates and ids: enough to count and to list. Background check reports, links to a report, training scores, certificates and the text of notes stay in Planning Center and are never stored by Shield.
